I agree, Blaine was closest in style to Georg, but Georg like Johnny Carson was inimitable.

Most people in Seattle come from somewhere else, even Georg Meyers was originally from California. Royal Brougham was born in St Louis.

I have to say I know a lot of people in Seattle, and nobody is a fan of Steve Kelley, so not sure exactly what the attraction is. His last column was pertty good, and he wrote one about a year ago concerning golfing in Afghanistan which was incredible. In between though, not so much.

Give Brewer a shot, I think he could end up being pretty special. Excellent guy too.

thganks for coming Tom, and keep the comments coming, I think we are going to have a pretty fun Fall once Husky football starts.John Berkowitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02506119469461963535noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29769884.post-77192581038884454322007-07-17T08:09:00.000-07:002007-07-17T08:09:00.000-07:00I've ordered the spiedie sauce and also made my ow...I've ordered the spiedie sauce and also made my own trying several recipes. They smell great and taste good, but not the same. I haven't found the right bread...who knows?

I hardly ever post there, usually just read when I get home, but I've had a couple of days where I've been up at the right time.

The book I'm reading calls it "core" exercising. I think SI, from my Dawgman subscription, had a series on it not long ago. I've seen some illustrations of yoga that look similar as well.hairofthedawghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15101240940373516922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29769884.post-51090238753608438842007-07-16T23:24:00.000-07:002007-07-16T23:24:00.000-07:00Re: Georg Myers was the last true sports writer t...Re: Georg Myers was the last true sports writer the Times has had.
Blaine Newman, an import from Eugene of all places, came closest.

I haven't read Steve Kelley in years, and don't know of anyone who follows him. How does a guy like that keep is job. Agree that
Geoff Baker is a breath of fresh air.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29769884.post-85248961580592957772007-07-16T10:59:00.000-07:002007-07-16T10:59:00.000-07:00We are flying into Westchester Connecticut and sta...We are flying into Westchester Connecticut and staying with friends. They have been kind enough to loan us their second car and we are then going to head up to Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Boston. We then head back to hang out with them, go sailing on Long Island Sound, and spend a night in Manhattan. Kate went to Boston College, so she wants to show me her old stomping grounds. She say's the seafood is incredible, and very comparable to the scene in Seattle. It is lobster season, so that alone should be worth the visit.

I am all for exploring the local culinary scene, especially when it is something you really can't get anywhere else. For instance in New England I will be concentrating on Lobster Roll's and Clam Strips quite a bit.

Not sure if Binghmpton is on the way, but Spiedes sound like they are worth the visit. Here is a link to get the marinade which makes them special.

http://www.spiedies.com/spiedies.htm

As far as Crew goes, what Ernst is doing is pretty incredible, but I think he always enjoyed working with the women, and that is where he had his greatest success. Make no mistake, no matter which team he is coaching, he is the boss of the program, and I expect he will remain director of rowing even when he retires from coaching if he wishes.

Steve Kelley's problem has always been his arrogance, his inability to bond with the Seattle fan's on a personal level, his biased views based on friendships within the teams he covers, and finally his lack of research on anything he writes about other than pro basketball. With the Sonic's likely leaving, Steve needs to make some changes. I have always been pretty surprised he lasted as long as he has in Seattle due to the fact that most fan's simply dislike him. Obviously the people he works for hold him in high regard.

Steve recently wrote a column blasting the hiring of PJ Carlesimo rather than a good friend of his Dwayne Casey. The column was a real turn off wheter you like PJ or not. Jerry Brewer on the other hand was a lot more objective, unbiased, and reasonable when writing a column about the hiring. Steve pushes his own agenda too much, while Brewer takes the more objective look without passing judgement before anything has happened.

I tried to find some old columns of Georg Meyers and couldn't find anything but the Kingdome blurb he wrote as a special when it was imploded. If you missed his era, you really missed something special. I will try to find more if possible. Georg was very much like Johnny Carson, when he was done, he was done.

I did notice you posting on USS Mariner. Those guys over there are awesome, in fact some of the best baseball minds on the planet.

I say we kick Arizona's butt too!

Was she doing pilates?John Berkowitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02506119469461963535noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29769884.post-77671998915510121972007-07-16T08:39:00.000-07:002007-07-16T08:39:00.000-07:00I've never been there either, only as far as upsta...I've never been there either, only as far as upstate NY and NJ. If you're driving and pass through the Binghamton, NY area, please do me a favor and find a place that sells spiedies and tell me if they are that good or if it was the beer. Having tried to duplicate them several times and not succeeding, I'd like to know if I'm chasing one of those memories.

I'm also wondering if the seafood up there is worth a visit.

You expressed my feeling about Coach Ernst and the crew program far better than I did the other day.

I'll read the Steve Kelley piece after I finish this and I hope I like it because a lot of his work I don't like. Comes with the trade I suppose.

I didn't read Georg Myers, at least to my knowledge, but I was the same way as a kid, devouring the sports page. I was constantly being told to wash my elbows because after coming in from playing and reading with sweaty elbows and soaking up ink.

I agree about Baker and Brewer, although I read Brewer more than Baker. The USS Mariner guys refer to his blog a lot and I'm gradually getting in the habit of visiting it regularly.

I say we kick Arizona's butt!

Off topic, when the Seahawks made their NFC title run, I invited an old friend from Cyprus to come down and join me. She wanted to do some car shopping as well and not much was available in Alaska where she was stationed. We had a great time and one day I was watching her do some odd looking stretching exercises. She's a petite redhead who has nearly a perfect shape and had I paid attention to the exercises more than the way she looked I would have learned something. I saw the cover of a book on core training that reminded me of her and bought it. The exercises look deceptively simple and easy, but after a couple of days, they're a lot of work and seem to be pretty effective. No heavy lifting involved, which kind of goes against the way I've worked out my entire life. It's worth a look as a fairly simple and efficient way to stay in shape. I'm hoping there's a chapter on 12 oz. curls upcoming though.

cheers...hairofthedawghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15101240940373516922noreply@blogger.com
