Huskies Fall in Close One to Cougars

The Cougars held a 40-32 lead at the half and outrebounded the Huskies 15-13. Washington however hung in throughout the second half but the Cougar's pulled it out in a game that went down to the last seconds left on the clock.

WSU's Taylor Rochestie scored a season-high 16 points off the bench and Derrick Low hit two free throws with 16.7 seconds left to help Washington State beat Washington 65-61. Freshman center Spencer Hawes had 22 points and sophomore forward Jon Brockman added 15 for the Huskies.

Tough loss for Washington tonight against a very tough team that will do well in the Big Dance. The Cougars are the masters of tempo, and it showed once again tonight as they controlled the rythym in a closely fought contest. The Huskies had their chances to win this one, but couldn't put down shots over the last three minutes of the game as the Cougars shut out the inside.

For Washington it is time to go back on the road with an intersectional contest against Pittsburgh this weekend, and two next week in Oregon. The Huskies better bring their brooms to the Willamette Valley if they want to stay alive. Things get even tougher as they close the season at home against UCLA, and USC.

well, johnb the dawgs gave this one away. Crowd was enthusiastic, had cougs on the run with their bigs having 4, 4 , 3 and fouls each. Oliver clamped down on Weaver, Lowe was no factor, so what happened? IMO they quit playing the game that got them there, and started chucking up bad shots with no need to hurry. Dentmon 3 times drove the lane to get too deep and two shots that didn't fall and 1 that resulted in a tie up. Hawes and brock were no factors the last 8 mins or so because the team didn't get them the ball. Apples on his last 3 point attempt b4 half shot a very very airball. We talked about how that would affect him the second half and he responded with two more airballs, talk about getting a head case.. Finally , it was the inability to make the front end of 1/1 frebies that did them in too. Props to WSU, they didn't make many mistakes, but this was another that should have been won. Against Stanford, I thought they played their best agme since LSU. I think offensively, Hawes could play in the NBA, but he needs 1 more year IMO to put on weight and not give up position and D. There was an article in one of the papers talking about QPon and the NBA. Why do the writers write that trash , he looks like a talented freshman player. Nelson has disappeared off the face of the earth both in time and when he is on the court effort. My observations only. Later

Great summary...I missed a lot of the game because I took my wife out to dinner for Valentines Day. The teams tends to play it's age in the latter stages of the ballgame. I do think they are improving, but we will see if it is too little too late over the next couple of weeks. It isn't over, till it's over.

I would hate to see Hawes go, he really could use a year, or two, plus it would be great to see him finish up the same year as Brockman.

Fortunately, my wife was TDY to New York city and Williamsburg, VA, so didn't have to do the valentines day stuff. Went to the games with my nephew. If the team plays within their strengths (get ball to Brock, Hawes, Apples keeping them honest outside) and they play with intensity, they can beat anyone. Right now the best way I see them making the 64 field is to win the Pac10 tourney, a very hard road since now they will have to win 4 at the tourney. Az is slipping quickly and with the Furd losing Goods, we had a chance to slip into as high as 5th, but that is a stretch now. But like you and the Yogi said, it ain't over till its over.
