Redshirt Impact

Lets take a quick look at the kids who sat out last year who get to play for the first time this Spring with hopes of breaking into the roatation, or earning a starting job.

QB Ronnie Fouch....Ron is ready to take over if Jake Locker goes down. He is a bright kid with a big future at Washington. Rumors had it that he was looking to transfer, but they proved to be wrong. Fouch is a player, and they will count on him as the depth behind him is green as grass.

RB Brandon Yakaboski....Brandon would have played last season if a concussion didn't blow him out in early season. He is hard hitting kid who will see a lot of time on special teams, and get adequate reps at TB.

RB Willie Griffin....By the end of the season coaches were raving about Willie and his future at UW. He goes into Spring trying to win the starting TB job from Brandon Johnson. Griffin is supposedly a very good inside runner.

WR Alvin Logan....Alvin had the luxury of a RS year to get to work with Locker, and the UW offense. That year learning will help him compete for a starting job in 2008. Logan is a big possession receiver.

TE Chris Izbicki....Last years banner recruit sat out to get bigger, and stronger. He will compete for a starting job this Spring. Willingham said that he was the complete package when they recruited him. Lets see if the package delivers this Spring.

OT Mark Armelin....Like all linemen he needs time, but the coaches like what they see so far. He will back up one of the tackles this season.

OT Scott Fancher....Another solid scout team kid from last year with a nice wingspan. He has a shot to get into the rotation at tackle.

OG Scott Schugert....Scott will compete for a starting job in 2008. He was so good the coaches considered playing him last year after bye week despite the depth they had built at guard.

DT Tyrone Duncan....A shoulder injury cut back his reps this Fall. He gets a chance to compete for a starting job in 2008 way before his time. We won't know what type of player he is till this Spring.

DT Nick Wood....They thought Nick was physically ready to play right away last year but decided to sit him out, and get his wrist fixed. We could use a breakthrough Spring out of Nick.

DE Kalani Aldrich....He didn't adapt well to the diet in the Northwest and hasn't been able to keep any weight on. Check back this Spring to see if that has improved.

LB Cort Dennison....The sleeper from last years class picked up quite a few Scout team honors in 2007.

CB Marquis Persley....Impressed coaches last year despite being very raw as a player. They think he could be an excellent big corner.

S Quinton Richardson....He was physically strong enough to play last year, but they went with Williams, and Aiyewa. Expect to see Quinton competing at CB this Spring despite his size. the coaches were surprised by how fast he was going forwards, and backwards.

K Erik Folk....A back injury preserved a year of eligibility. He will probably handle kickoffs and long field goals. His brother kicks for the Cowboys.

You have a great blog here. I really enjoy the discussions of actual UW sports rather than the mind-numbing "Ty talk" on some of the other blogs.

You must have been typing too fast, though, because you got a few of the names wrong. It's Kalani Aldrich, Cort Dennison, and Erik Folk.
